Local lad again wins the oldest recorded hill race: Creag Choinnich, 10 July
Jul 13, 2010

From Alastair Hubbard:

Creag Choinnich is the oldest recorded hill race dating back to 1064 when it was organised by King Malcolm Canmore of Scotland to find fleet footed messengers. Local lad Dennisbell McGregor won on that day.

Fast forward to 2010 and another local(ish) lad - Dan Whitehead - took the honours ahead of thirty one other hopefuls.

The race starts and finishes in Braemar's impressive Highland Games arena and sees the competitors racing through the streets of Braemar before tackling the climb through pine woods to the top of Creag Choinnich. There is a fast dash down the main path before runners rejoin their outward route back to the games park.

The race coincides with the Junior Highland Games and so makes a great outing for families - Mum and Dad can race whilst leaving the kids absorbed in the Junior events. Now that's a win-win situation!
