Race organier, Ross Bannerman, was pleased with the turnout of 61 runners for Saturday's Slioch Horseshoe race. Conditions were warm and rather muggy, with cloud level just fluctuating at around Munro level, but certainly not as hot nor testing as has been the case in previous years.
From the off, a likely trio of Brian Marshall (HELP), Alec Keith (HBT) and Stewart Whitlie (Carnethy) broke away. During the climb, the lead changed hands several times and at the summit it was still very close. On the run out along the ridge to CP4 however, Brian began to open up a gap and this increased further on the steep descent down to CP5. Brian continued to run strongly back along the track to Kinlochewe to finish in a record time of 2:08:05, leaving Alec in 2nd and Stewart in 3rd. A little further back, Martin Hulme had a fine race, finishing 17th and taking the V60 record in the process.
In the ladies race, all the leading contenders were quite closely bunched together half way round, but Susan Blackwood (Inverness) showed superior strength and descending skills to come home a clear victor from Veronique Oldham (Cosmics) and Amanda Blackhall (Lochaber) respectively.
