Andy Symonds wins SHR Long Classics Series
Oct 11, 2009
Andy Symonds (Carnegie Harriers) has won the 2009 SHR Long Classics Series, which concluded today at the Pentland Skyline. Ellen Homewood (Westerlands) was first lady.

40 runners completed the series which is based on your 5 best results from 11 races, and a total of 745 runners completed at least 1 race in the Long Classics Series.

Final results for 2009 Long Classics Series

Men's Competition
With Andy Symonds' Transalpine partner Tom Owens absent from the Pentland Skyline, Andy was assured of victory in the Long Classics series without even needing to run the final race.

Stewart Whitlie took full advantage of the absence of Tom Owens and Al Anthony (who could have finished 1st or 2nd) by leapfrogging Alec Keith and moved into 2nd position overall. Dave Cummins remained in 4th position overall, and 3rd male vet 40.

Top 4 male finishers:
1. Andy Symonds, Carnegie Harriers
2. Stewart Whitlie, Carnethy (and 1st M40) - same result as 2008
3. Alec Keith, HBT (and 2nd M40) - same result as 2008
4. Dave Cummins, Shettleston (and 3rd M40)

David Dickson of Garscube finished as 1st M50, after having taken 1st male vet 50 in the Bog & Burn Series. Not bad for his first season of hill running!

Graham Arthur of Ilkley Harriers not only lives more than 400 miles from Yorkshire, but also retained his male vet 60 title in the Long Classics series and recorded the greatest number of race completions with 10 out of 11.

Women's Competition
Despite having a season wracked with illness and injury, Ellen Homewood (Westerlands) showed enough consistency across the series, with especially good runs at Slioch, Glen Rosa and Ben Rinnes, to finish as leading female.

Susannah Macmillan (unattached) finished 2nd lady, and 1st female vet 40, just 5 points ahead of Jacqui Higginbottom (Carnethy) who finished as 3rd lady, and 2nd female vet 40.

Alayne Finlay of Ochils was 2nd senior lady and 4th female overall.

Elaine Stewart of Cosmics successfully defended her female vet 50 title.

Race Winners

In the men's competition there were a total of 9 winners over the 11 races, with Andy Symonds and Al Anthony being the only runners to win 2 races. The 7 other race winners were Jon Duncan, Ian Holmes, Brian Marshall, Stewart Whitlie, Tom Owens, Scott Fraser, and Oleg Chepelin.

In the women's competition there was an equally wide range of race winners with Angela Mudge and Megan Mowbray being the only runners with 2 race wins each. The 7 other female race winners were Clare Whitehead, Kate Jenkins, Ellen Homewood, Claire Gordon, Iona Robertson and Fiona Maxwell.
