Comrie Hills Relay, 9 September
Sep 10, 2007
Organising club Strathearn Harriers took full advantage of navigational errors from all the other leading clubs to retain their title in this superb low-key relay from Comrie. Held over 4 legs (with a 5 person team - the second leg is a pairs leg) and with a BBQ afterwards it is a lovely event

Fife took second and Carnethy third (after Carnethy had been in last place on the first leg having had an extended tour of the Comrie hills; Fife Vets & Central had been disqualified for missing a control and Highland Hill Runners had gone walkabout on the last leg).

In the ladies, a perfect navigational run by Carnethy on first leg saw them take an early lead, but Central came through to win. Fife pulled up to second after they decided it was their turn to take a wander on the first leg ! Full results are here

Strathearn Harriers' Phil Mesteky adds:

"A memorable and interest-filled Comrie Hills Relay saw a surprise result with Strathearn Harriers Men's team (Glencorse, Mestecky P., Wake S., Sym, Beattie) retaining their title in the overall race and their Mixed Team (Mestecky E., Flint, Morrison, Tipping, Pass) coming home first in their category too. Clearly, local knowledge played a crucial part in the result: described by some as "tortoises", they were one of the few teams to navigate the 4 legs without a hitch while some of the more hare-like runners found themselves navigationally challenged on the day.

The women's race was won by Central AC (Buchanan, Waterhouse, Harrison, Docherty and Pickett) while Beacon Runners (McFie, Bowman, Summers, Wombwell S., Wombwell M.) picked up the Male Vets prize.

Thanks go to Alex Dillion as race coordinator and to the folk that provided the free after-race barbecue, tea and cakes.

Stage Winners Prizes, courtesy of The Famous Grouse Experience were:

Leg 1. Colin Glencorse (Strathearn); Leg 2. Steven Fallon and Jon Ascroft (Carnethy) - New course record; Leg 3. Andrew Wright (Highland Hillrunners) - New course record; Leg 4. Adrian Davis (Carnethy) - New course record."
